LAP-BAND with Spider
Offering Patients the STARR Treatment for Weight Loss Surgery
Dr. Jessee is amongst the leading surgeons that are pioneering a less invasive approach to bariatric surgery. The STARR treatment stands for Surgical Tiny Access and Rapid Recovery. The goal is to minimize and reduce the size and number of incisions in a manner that helps the patient rapidly recover from surgery with minimal pain and excellent aesthetic results. The technology behind the STARR treatment is the SPIDER® Surgical System.

Dr. Jessee was the first bariatric surgeon in the world to place an adjustable gastric band utilizing the SPIDER Surgical Platform in March 2010. Since then, she has done more adjustable gastric banding procedures using this single-incision instrument than any other surgeon in the country. She understood that using the SPIDER Surgical Platform would benefit the patients as it helps with minimal post-operative pain, allows patients to heal faster and leaves a barely noticeable scar, located typically in the belly button. Patients who have undergone placement of an adjustable gastric band using this new technology rave about recovery times and that people can hardly tell they even had surgery. See for yourself. This is a picture of a patients scar status post adjustable gastric banding surgery using the SPIDER Surgical Platform.

What is the Spider Surgical System?
The SPIDER Surgical System is a laparoscopic platform that is used to perform minimally invasive surgery. Unlike conventional rigid laparoscopic surgery, the SPIDER flexible laparoscopic platform allows multiple instruments to be used through one incision. The result is fewer incisions and a faster recovery for the patient, while providing surgeons with enhanced capabilities.
How does the SPIDER Surgical System work?
SPIDER works by providing surgeons with multiple instrument channels through one small incision. Small, flexible instruments are inserted in the right and left channels, and they provide the surgeon with dexterity in performing multiple tasks throughout the surgery. SPIDER is unique in how it opens up within the abdomen to give the surgeon working room to perform the surgery.
SPIDER: Enabling less invasive surgery
The surgeon inserts the SPIDER Surgical System through a single incision usually locate near the patient's belly button. The system opens up umbrella-like within the abdomen, providing the surgeon with two flexible channels for right-and left-handed instruments with 360-degree range of motion, and two rigid channels for small cameras and other instruments. Once the procedure is complete, the SPIDER Surgical System closes up and is removed through the same incision.

HOW SPIDER WORKS
With the SPIDER Surgical System, surgeons operate with a set of tiny, flexible instruments through a single incision near the patient’s belly button, most often creating a scarless result. Here's how the procedure works.

The surgical device is inserted through a small incision in your belly button.

Once inside, the system expands umbrella-like, and the surgeon can use a variety of instruments to perform the procedure.

Once the procedure is complete, the surgeon collapses the system in preparation for removing.

The tools and the system are removed through the original incision.
