Dr. Jessee Performs Single Incision LAP-BAND
ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Dr. Tiffany Jessee has become the first surgeon in the WORLD to perform an Adjustable Gastric Band procedure using flexible laparoscopic surgery, an entirely new class of minimally invasive surgery.
The first procedure was performed at Palms of Pasadena Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida on Tuesday, March 23rd during a Lap-BAND® procedure. “We are very excited to have the opportunity to offer this less invasive technique said Dr. Jessee, bariatric surgeon. “Unlike some earlier attempts at single incision surgery, surgeons do not have to cross their hands to effectively operate. The SPIDER™ allows the surgeon to control desired angles while maintaining a clear operative view. It is important because it potentially will impact post-surgical pain, recovery and aesthetic outcomes”.
Flexible laparoscopy –utilizing the TransEnterix SPIDER™ Surgical System – represents a significant technical advancement to traditional multi-port laparoscopy, which has been used since the late 1980’s.
Flexible laparoscopy incorporates the minimally invasive approach of catheter-based surgery with the familiar approach of traditional laparoscopic surgery. Catheter-based technologies have previously allowed surgeons to perform complex procedures on the heart and brain through small incisions. Surgeons can now use small, catheter instruments to perform complex surgeries in the abdomen.
Surgeons insert the SPIDER Surgical System through a single incision (approximately 2 cm) – as opposed to the current standard Adjustable Gastric Band technique, which uses 5 incisions. The surgical system then opens up within the abdomen providing the surgeon with two flexible channels for their right and left hand surgical instruments, and two other channels for small cameras and instruments. The surgeon uses small, flexible instruments that are less than 5mm in diameter. Once the surgery is complete, the flexible surgical system closes up and is removed through the single incision.
By adding flexible laparoscopy to its services, Palms of Pasadena Hospital is demonstrating its continued leadership in providing patients with advanced, minimally invasive surgical options.
